Engine mount: quite possibly the most stressed parts on an aircraft

Aircraft engine mounts are one of the most important features on an aircraft.  These mounts connect the engine to a pylon, which then connects to the wing; each pylon has a forward and aft engine mount. 

Aircraft engine mounts undergo massive amounts of stress daily, especially during aircraft takeoff and landing.  Additionally, engine mounts provide weight distribution and spread the torque and vibration created by the engine.

Due to the high levels of heat put off by the engine, these mounts must be able to withstand temperatures up to 500 °C.  They also need to possess high fracture toughness, meaning that they need to have the capability of withstanding these high temperatures without creating pressure cracks.  Engine mounts are made to last for the entire lifetime of the aircraft, so there are no replacement options available; Aircraft lifecycles typically last between 25-30 years. 

Since all aircrafts are created differently, every engine develops heat differently.  Consequently, each aircraft engine mount is different.  Depending on engine requirements, BÖHLER Schmiedetechnik GmbH & Co KG uses three different types of materials when manufacturing their mounts:

·         Nickel-based alloys – used in cases of extremely high temperatures

·         Titanium alloys – is half the weight of steel, used when light weight is necessary

·         High-alloy steels – contain chromium and molybdenum, used when high strength is needed at lower temperatures
