What Are Camloc Fasteners?

In the realm of aviation, fasteners serve as one of the most crucial aspects of aircraft assembly. For a typical commercial airliner, around 50% of all parts used during the manufacturing process will consist of fasteners. Based on the parts that are being assembled and various requirements or needs, a number of fastener types may be used. For the seducing of aircraft cowlings and fairings, Camloc fasteners are regularly relied on. While highly reliable and easy to use, there are various Camloc fastener subtypes that one may choose from, necessitating one having a basic understanding of what such fasteners do and the types that are available for use.

Camloc fasteners are considered a type of turnlock fastener, belonging to the family of parts that include Dzus and Airloc fasteners as well. Camloc fasteners are made up of three parts, those of which are a stud assembly, grommet, and a receptacle. When installing various cowlings and fairings, the stud and grommet are situated in a removable portion while the receptacle is securely riveted to the aircraft structure. Based on the area one is working in and the thickness of the installed materials, the stud and grommet may either be placed in a plain, countersunk, counterbored, or dimpled hole. Camloc fasteners are quite easy to install and remove as needed, simply requiring a 90 degree turn for locking and disengaging.

For the common subtypes of Camloc fasteners, one may either procure rigid or floating types. To find the right fit for a particular application or need, one should consider strength requirements, head stile, installation method, and operational characteristics before choosing a stud style. To ensure that an accurate material thickness is calculated, one should consider any paint, finishes, or compressed gaskets that may be present within the assembly.

As Dzus and Airloc fasteners belong in the same family of components, it can be useful to also have a basic understanding of their capabilities and applications as well. Dzus turnlock fasteners are fairly similar to Camloc fasteners in their design, consisting of a stud, grommet, and a receptacle. The grommet acts as a holding device for the stud, and it will often be made from a material such as aluminum. With the use of a metallic spring, force can be exerted on the stud when assemblies are joined together, ensuring that it is locked and secured in place. Also similar to Camloc fasteners, Dzus fasteners are unlocked and locked with a turn, that of which can be done with the use of a screwdriver or a Dzus key.

Airloc fasteners are a bit different from the other two, featuring an assembly made up of a stud, cross pin, and stud receptacle. To ensure correct installation, one will need to determine the material thickness of parts that are to be secured so that the right stud length can be chosen. Studs may be procured with different head types, those of include are flush, oval, and wing options. It is important that the cross pin of the component is never re-used, as once it is removed from the stud, it will need to be replaced.
